Sylvia K. Wood is a Clinical Associate Professor at Stony Brook University’s School of Nursing. Dr. Wood completed her Ph.D. in Nursing at Adelphi University, DNP, Master of Science in Nursing, and Nurse Practitioner in Adult Health at Stony Brook University. She received her Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing at Roberts Wesleyan College. Dr. Wood began her nursing practice career in 1979 and is committed to a lifelong learning journey to enhance her abilities as a nurse practitioner, educator, and researcher. She is a national board-certified adult health nurse practitioner and adult oncology nurse practitioner. Dr. Wood’s nursing experience is broad, spanning over forty years, and includes practice in primary care, hospice/palliative care, hematology/oncology, clinical trials research, and administrative positions. Dr. Wood works with other oncology nurse scholars to improve oncology nursing practice and has presented both regionally and nationally. Working with the Oncology Nursing Society’s Putting Evidence into Practice (PEP) initiative, Dr. Wood serves on the Peripheral Neuropathy and Prevention of Infection teams supporting the translation and implementation of research into clinical practice. In addition, Dr. Wood served as a content developer for the Oncology Nursing Society’s Post Master’s online hematology course and as a peer reviewer for Supportive Care in Cancer and Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology. She is passionate about advancing and contributing to the distinctive theoretical and scientific knowledge underpinning the discipline of nursing. Dr. Wood attributes her passion and learning journey throughout her nursing career to the iconic nurse theorist, Martha Rogers, who said nursing was not defined just by what nurses do, but what nurses know, and the use of that knowledge is nursing practice. She is deeply grateful to all her mentors throughout her career and is committed to igniting a passion for inquiry in her nursing students. Her area of research focuses on cancer survivorship in older adults.
