The 2027 SBSON Awards and Scholarships Ceremony

Note: RSVP deadline for recipients is April 1, 2027.
Students, please self-nominate for one or more awards/scholarships. Review the eligibility criteria carefully before submitting your self-nomination.
Self-nominations are due by 5 pm on Friday, October 23.
Please note: Not all awards are represented here; several awards have an alternative selection process and are not open to self-nomination.
Winning recipients will be notified via email at the beginning of the spring semester. More information regarding next steps will be communicated via email.

Graduate Student Awards
Brooke Ellison Legacy Scholarship
Eligibility: Currently full-time (min. 6 credits) in one of the SON’s graduate programs; special consideration may be given to candidates who demonstrate financial need.

Ellen Weisenberg Endowed Nursing Scholarship
Eligibility: Currently enrolled in one of the following graduate programs: Adult-Gero NP Program, Family NP Program, or Pediatric NP Program.
Other criteria: Demonstrated financial need, overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference given to a student who desires to work with individuals with physical, behavioral, and/or developmental disabilities.

Gene Mundie Endowed Scholarship
Eligibility: Currently full-time (min. 6 credits) doctoral-level study (PhD or DNP).

George E. Xippolitos Memorial Award
Eligibility: Doctoral-level study (PhD or DNP). Provides support for doctoral research with an emphasis in cardiac nursing, including but not limited to research, travel, awards, and professional development.

Julia O. Wells Memorial Education Foundation Award
Eligibility: Currently enrolled as a School of Nursing student who is pursuing a degree in professional nursing.

Kappa Gamma Nursing Scholarship
Eligibility: Currently full-time in a master’s graduate program and in good academic standing. For graduate programs, full-time is considered 6 or more credits.

Kim Mehmood Scholarship
Eligibility: Currently enrolled full-time in any undergraduate or graduate program; demonstrates financial need; preference given to students interested in practicing in the field of pediatric nursing.

Marie Frey Memorial Award
Eligibility: Currently enrolled in the Midwifery Program. Demonstrates outstanding clinical skills. This candidate believes that birth is a profound event that has the capacity to empower women to make positive changes for themselves and their families, forever enriching their lives.

Mary G. Bourguignon Memorial Award
Eligibility: Currently full-time (min. 6 credits) in the Midwifery Program; special consideration may be given to candidates who demonstrate financial need and/or are from an ethnically diverse background.

School of Nursing Alumni Board Scholarship Award
Eligibility: Full-time student in undergraduate or graduate programs, demonstrated financial need, minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.25, and excellence in community and/or university service.

Sigma Award in Recognition of Doretta Dick
Eligibility: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or doctoral (DNP or PhD) program. This award is given out for excellence in professional writing. Writing submission required.

Barbara Mills Scholarship in Nursing
Eligibility: Currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program (ABP, BBP, or RNBP). Demonstrated financial need and good academic standing.

Diane Ducy Hitchings-Tiernan ’72 RN Baccalaureate Award
Eligibility: Currently enrolled as a full-time student at the School of Nursing. Special consideration is given to students who previously graduated from a two-year RN program and are entering the RNBP program. Otherwise, choose a full-time student from another undergraduate nursing program (ABP or BBP).
Special consideration is also given to a student who has an interest in and was involved with community service and displays leadership capabilities. The chosen student must show financial need and have a current overall cumulative GPA of at least 2.8.

Frances Bisignano Scholarship Award
Eligibility: Currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program (ABP, BBP, or RNBP) with a current overall cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher. Special consideration is given to first-year nursing students in the ABP or BBP program influenced by a family member to become a nurse.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (ABP, BBP, or RNBP); must be a veteran or a family member of a veteran.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (ABP, BBP, or RNBP); first year of program; minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.0; financial need; strong commitment to the nursing profession.

Jim Stelling Family Endowed Scholarship in Nursing
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate student (ABP, BBP, or RNBP programs); minimum GPA of 3.3; preference given to a student who is in the first year of their program and demonstrates financial need.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program (ABP, BBP, or RNBP); financial need; interest or experience in cancer care for the elderly.
