Ann-Margaret Navarra Earns NSHC Nurse of Excellence Award
Associate Dean for Nursing Research and Innovation Ann-Margaret Navarra, PhD, CPNP-PC, FAAN, became the latest Stony Brook University School of Nursing (SON) faculty member to receive a Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) Nurse of Excellence Award.
At a reception held at Watermill Caterers in Smithtown, NY, on September 29, Dr. Navarra was recognized for outstanding leadership and clinical practice and became the fourth consecutive winner from the SON.
Twenty-three nominees were selected from a pool of nearly 500 nurses at Long Island teaching institutions and hospitals; Dr. Navarra earned the top honor for nursing education excellence.
“I am truly honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Dr. Navarra. “Accepting it comes with a responsibility to persevere in excellence on behalf of the nursing profession and the communities we serve. I sincerely thank the NSHC committee members and extend my congratulations to the nominees and other award recipients.”
A leader in nursing science and an expert in pediatric HIV care, Dr. Navarra is the current president of the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS) and has published dozens of scholarly articles. She serves as a role model and mentor, inspiring students, colleagues, and fellow nurses.
"The Nurse of Excellence Award recognizes not only outstanding clinical expertise, but also the professionalism, leadership, and commitment to lifelong learning that define exceptional nursing practice,” said SON Dean Patricia Bruckenthal, PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN. “Her achievement brings great pride to the School of Nursing and exemplifies the values we strive to instill in our students, faculty, and our profession."
Faculty who demonstrate excellence in education are nominated for the award by deans of Long Island schools of nursing. Dr. Navarra follows in the footsteps of current and former SBU colleagues Giselle Gerardi, PhD, RN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, Rewa Thompson, DNP, RN, WHNP-BC, and Maria Milazzo, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, who collected the award in each of the last three years.
The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council represents the not-for-profit and public hospitals on Long Island. It works in conjunction with the Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State to advance legislative and regulatory priorities.
