Dr. Barbara M. Brathwaite, DNP, MSN, RN, CBN is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University School of Nursing.
Dr. Brathwaite’s seminal contribution to nursing is grounded in improving health care as an advocate for vulnerable populations, as a practitioner in health behavior change, and as an educator to nurses from diverse backgrounds. Her views on quality health care were informed by varied experiences in trauma, critical care and psychiatric nursing. Consequently, she directed attention to identifying health risks among vulnerable populations and assisting in behavior change. She is involved in the PACE program, Partnership to Advance Collaborative Education, an interprofessional collaborative practice model that aims to identify risky and unhealthy behaviors among college age students and older adults, thus promoting health and preventing disease for these populations.
Currently, Dr. Brathwaite practices in an obesity management and general surgery office and provides care to patients pursuing general and bariatric surgery. Her clinical practice in this area has expanded by conducting and collaborating on several research studies, publications and presentations related to obesity and weight loss. She is committed to improving the health of those with chronic illness, including obesity.
Dr. Brathwaite’s philosophy of education is built on the assertion that research, education, and clinical practice are vitally linked. Her goal is mentoring, motivating, and educating our future nurse leaders by instilling knowledge on how to combine education, practice, and research to provide high level evidence-based care and improve the health outcomes of their patients.
