Professor Sofia Reyes is a Clinical Instructor that recently joined the Stony Brook University School of Nursing as the Director of Simulation Education in 2021. As a nurse for over 13 years prior to joining the faculty and staff at the School of Nursing, she has worked primarily in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Stony Brook University Hospital and has recently transitioned to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. She also has obtained Critical Care Nursing-Adult (CCRN-A) certification from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Association (AACN), and lectures for Stony Brook University Hospital’s Nursing Professional Development Department’s review course bi-annually. She was an adjunct clinical instructor for Population Health Nursing and Principles and Applications of Nursing Interventions I and II (“Fundamentals”) from 2014 to 2020.

She also holds a Master of Science Degree as a Nurse Practitioner, and is currently nationally board certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She has been practicing in primary and subacute care (with a focus on women’s health, geriatrics, and adults) for the last decade at a variety of institutions, including Adelphi University and Northwell Health. Additionally, she holds an Advanced Graduate Certificate / Post Master of Science Degree in Nursing Education and currently precepts Masters in Nursing Education students at the Learning Resource Center (Bed Lab).

As a triple alum of Stony Brook University’s School of Nursing for both undergraduate and graduate programs, she volunteers her time in various areas. She lectures for the AACN’s (American Association of Colleges of Nursing) Vizient Nurse Residency Program at Stony Brook University Hospital for Preceptor Development Day, coordinates “Open Lab” days for students who would like to improve their clinical skills on a one-on-one basis, coordinates “Bed Lab” tours for students who are interested in applying to Stony Brook University’s School of Nursing, and collaborates with both Pre-Nursing Society and Stony Brook Student Nurses’ Association for student and community outreach projects.

As Director of Simulation Education, she uses her clinical knowledge and experience with current evidence based practice measures to assist students in applying clinical concepts learned in the classroom while in a safe learning environment. She currently works with the Course Coordinators of the Undergraduate Department for pre-licensure nursing skills labs and simulations, and with the Program Directors of the Graduate Department to coordinate on-site clinical intensives that are applicable to their current clinical practice. She also coordinates with Stony Brook University’s Renaissance School of Medicine for simulations to introduce the importance of collaboration between the nursing and medical professions, and will begin collaborating with Stony Brook University’s School of Health Professions to build Interprofessional Education and Practice Initiatives.
