The prestigious Susan Flynn Fellowship aims to “help stimulate the career interest and foster the professional development of potential oncology nurses.” Through direct observation of oncology patient care, exposure to relevant patient care responsibilities and services, and a variety of supervised applied practice, the preceptor-based curriculum will improve the student's fundamental clinical education.

The fellowship is highly competitive, with only five nursing students selected each year. Fitzmaurice is one of two students chosen for the pediatric oncology specialization.

“I’m beyond grateful to be selected as a Flynn Fellow, and also super proud to be the first ever from Stony Brook,” said Fitzmaurice.

“Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital truly holds a very special place in my heart, and to my family, and I’m grateful to have been given this amazing opportunity to give back to many patients and families, the same way many healthcare workers had done for my family,” she added.

Inspired by experience

Fitzmaurice has volunteered at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for the last two years and, after spending time with oncology patients, experienced a shift in perspective that led her to pursue oncology nursing.

“To be able to gain such hands-on pediatric experience as an undergraduate nursing student is something that I’m extremely thankful for,” Fitzmaurice said.

“I feel that I was destined to be in a pediatric nursing career, and I believe that this fellowship will help me jumpstart my dreams and desires of becoming a pediatric nurse after I graduate.”

Fitzmaurice will spend eight weeks at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital in June and July, where she will have opportunities to participate in educational programs and attend staff meetings.
