1969-1981 — Dr. Ellen Fahy, first Dean of the School of Nursing. Dr. Fahy arrives from Columbia University having served on the Muir Commission that recommended the creation of various health science schools at Stony Brook University. Dr. Edmund D. Pelligrino (VP for Health Sciences) asks Dr. Fahy to establish a Nursing Program.

1970 — Dr. Howard Oaks is appointed Vice President of Health Sciences Center. School of Nursing is housed on the west side of Nicolls Road.

1970 — Four year upper division undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Program opens under the direction of Dr. Carole L. Blair with 100 students.

1970 — Continuing education programs begin. Rose Meyers Director.

1971 — First 16 RNBP students graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Nursing. First students to graduate from any of the schools on the Health Science Campus.

1973 — Dr. Lenora J. McClean launches the first Accredited Master of Science programs for Nurse Practitioners/Clinical Nurse Specialists: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (CCNP) and Psych/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMNP).

1975 Master’s Program for Nurse Practitioner’s Clinical Nurse Specialist opens with tracks in Critical Care, Family Health, Mental Health, and Women’s Health. Ten students enrolled.

1975 — Dr. Lenora McClean becomes Director of the full time Master’s Degree Graduate Program.

1974/1975 — School receives a two year grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and establishes: The Mediated Approach to the Teaching and Learning of Physical Assessment Skills in the Baccalaureate Nursing Program.
A lab was designed for learning and used audiovisual tutorial methods to teach physical assessment skills.

1977 — First Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist Class graduates.

1980 — Dr. Lenora J. McClean appointed Interim Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing.

1980's — Additional onsite NP programs opened: Perinatal/Women’s Health, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Psych/Mental Health CNS.

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program was the 1st International distributed learning effort in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Masters Completion program enabled Nurse Practitioners without a Master’s degree to earn one.

Post Masters Certificate for Nurse Practitioners provided an opportunity for Nurse Practitioners to become certified in an additional specialty.

1980-2003 — Ora James Bouey, Mary Anne Dumas, Kathy Shurpin, Elayne DeSimone and Patricia Long receive the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

1980 — Stony Brook University Hospital opens.

1981 — Dr. Lenora J. McClean appointed 2nd Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing and Dr. Carole L. Blair appointed Associate Dean School of Nursing.

1982 — Jacques Sherman MD. and Sylvia Fields RN, Ed.D co-authored Guide to Patient Evaluation: History-Taking, Physical Examination and The Problem-oriented Method.

1983 — School of Nurs​​ing Honor Society established.

1983 — NYS Senator Kenneth P. LaValle presents Dean McClean a proclamation signed by Governor Mario Cuomo declaring Nursing week. In 1989 Nurse Practitioner week also became an annual event.

1988 — Kappa Gamma Chapter, becomes a Chartered Member of Sigma Theta Tau International with the induction of 268 members.
Maryanne Bezyack became the Founding President. Gene Mundie was the Ambassador and Benefactor of the chapter guiding the chapter in becoming well known to the Sigma Theta Tau International Community.
The Chapter has won several key awards.

1994 — Online Midwifery program pilot begins with funding from the NY State Department of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the SUNY Office of Educational Technology using Lotus Notes platform. Clinical Practicum was provided by preceptors in hospital settings.
Dr. Judith Treistman first Director.

1995-2001 — Dr. McClean appointed as the Chief Nursing Officer of Stony Brook University Hospital. This joint appointment helped to integrate education, practice, and research in a service setting.

1995 — Dr. Arleen Steckel creates a Radiological Diagnostics course for Nurse Practitioners in collaboration with Stony Brook University Hospital radiologists. Course successfully ran for more than 10 years.

1996 — Josiah Macy Jr. Grant-Selected faculty from each of the 5 Health Sciences Schools developed course curriculum for HSC 500: Health, Sciences and Society. Ten students from each school participated in the course. Goal: to understand each specialty’s focus and how to combine our strengths as health care providers contributed to better patient/client healthcare outcomes. Course ran for more than 10 years.

1996 — Surgical Technology Program opened 1996 with Professor Ora James Bouey as Program Director. First graduate 1997

1997 — First graduate from Midwifery Master Completion Program.

1997 — The following Nurse Practitioner programs were developed for Distance Education:
Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult Health Nurse Practitioner and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.

1998 — Nurse Practitioner programs were developed for Distance Education for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

1999 — Nurse Practitioner program was developed for Distance Education for Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

1999 — Nurse Practitioner program was developed for Distance Education for the RN to BS program.

2002 — Perinatal/Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner Program.

2002 — Kappa Gamma Chapter is recipient of Sigma Theta Tau Region 14 Computer-Based Professional Technology Pinnacle Award for Excellence.

2003 — Dr. Lenora J. McClean retires after 30 years.

2004 Dr. Mary Nies appointed as the third Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing.

2005-2009 — Dr. Lenora J. McClean returns as interim Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing.

2005-2009 — Ora James Bouey appointed Associate Dean of the School of Nursing.

2007 — Distance education to prepare nursing faculty in Eritrea: diffusion of an innovative model aimed at increasing the number of qualified nursing faculty in Eritrea.

2008 — Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program opens with 34 students.

2008 — Learning Resources Center Clinical Skills lab updated thanks to resources provided by Fred Sganga, Executive Director of Long Island States Veterans Home.

2009 — 1st Doctor of Nursing Practice class graduates.

2009 — Dr. Lee Anne Xippolitos appointed as the Fourth Dean of the School of Nursing.

2013 — Post Graduate Certificate program and Masters of Science in Nursing Education opens.

2013 — The HRSA cooperative agreement for veterans began on 9/1/2013 and ran for six years concluding on 8/31/2019.
The initial proposal was for four years of funding, HRSA added a fifth and we had a one year no cost extension for the sixth. Principal Investigator, Dr. Lori Escallier.

2014 — Post Graduate Certificate program and Masters of Science in Nursing Leadership program in Nursing Leadership opens.

2015 — School of Nursing received the Exemplary Academic-Practice Partnership Award from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) at the October 2015 meeting in Washington, DC.

2017Nursing First Program with Suffolk Community College opens as a joint admissions program under the leadership of Dr. Lee Anne Xippolitos and Dr. Cheryl Shaefer;
Nursing Scholars Program opens that admits students to the School of Nursing upon admission.

2018 — Ph.D in Nursing program opens.

2019 — Dr. Annette Wysocki appointed as the fifth Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing
