1980 — Dr. Lenora J. McClean appointed Interim Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing.
1980's — Additional onsite NP programs opened: Perinatal/Women’s Health, Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Psych/Mental Health CNS.
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program was the 1st International distributed learning effort in Nova Scotia, Canada.
Masters Completion program enabled Nurse Practitioners without a Master’s degree to earn one.
Post Masters Certificate for Nurse Practitioners provided an opportunity for Nurse Practitioners to become certified in an additional specialty.
1980-2003 — Ora James Bouey, Mary Anne Dumas, Kathy Shurpin, Elayne DeSimone and Patricia Long receive the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
1980 — Stony Brook University Hospital opens.
1981 — Dr. Lenora J. McClean appointed 2nd Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing and Dr. Carole L. Blair appointed Associate Dean School of Nursing.
1982 — Jacques Sherman MD. and Sylvia Fields RN, Ed.D co-authored Guide to Patient Evaluation: History-Taking, Physical Examination and The Problem-oriented Method.
1983 — School of Nursing Honor Society established.
1983 — NYS Senator Kenneth P. LaValle presents Dean McClean a proclamation signed by Governor Mario Cuomo declaring Nursing week. In 1989 Nurse Practitioner week also became an annual event.
1988 — Kappa Gamma Chapter, becomes a Chartered Member of Sigma Theta Tau International with the induction of 268 members. Maryanne Bezyack became the Founding President. Gene Mundie was the Ambassador and Benefactor of the chapter guiding the chapter in becoming well known to the Sigma Theta Tau International Community. The Chapter has won several key awards.
1989 — Child Health Nurse Practitioner Program (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner) on site opens.
